I have no idea why I love disasters movies so much. The thought of any of this disaster films really happening scares the "you know what" out of me. Needless to say I was sold on 2012 when I saw the teaser trailer months ago.
As my dad would say, 2012 is what it is. It's a disaster movie that doesn't try to be anything more than just that. Buying my ticket guaranteed me two things: an alright storyline and great special effects.
The events in the film are based around a theory that the Mayan calendar predicts the world ends in 2012. It's a pretty straight forward theory, and a great premise for a big budget Hollywood movie.
The movie starts with a flashback three years earlier when President Thomas Wilson (Danny Glover) is informed of Earth's pending doom. Fast forward to one year later and President Wilson is meeting with the world leaders to share the grave news.
Side note: I see what you are doing Hollywood. We've had a few Black Presidents that I can remember:
•President Palmer on 24 – He was President during one of the worst terrorist threats this country has ever faced. If it wasn't for Jack Bauer, he would have been remembered as the President that caused the worst nuclear disaster in history. Instead he is assassinated and now I only see him selling me All-State Insurance.
•President Beck in Deep Impact – He would go down as the last President of the United States. No, not because the sinking value of the U.S Dollar forced us to join the European Union. It's because a meteor the size of California crashed into Earth, destroying life as we know it. He found out about the disaster years prior and lied to the American people. He was also behind the most famous rigged lottery since the 1985 NBA Draft Lottery.
•President Lindberg in The Fifth Element – Lindberg had the honor of being President while a black cloud of evil was waiting to devour the entire Universe. There wasn't too much he could do. Thank God for future John McClane to help save the day.
•President Camacho in Idiocracy – This President was voted into office once the entire world had completely dummed itself down. Trash had piled up all over the place and the earth looked a garbage dump. Not to mention he dressed like a mix between Hulk Hogan Hogan and Richard Simmons.
I see what you are doing Hollywood. Black President = Disaster!!! You aren't going to keep sneaking those curve balls by me.
2012 stars John Cusack as Jackson, a man trying to save his family during Earth's destruction. Him and his family are joined by a few other people as they all look for safety. The movie also stars some of my favorite actors/actresses Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, and Oliver Platt.
One of my favorite characters in 2012 was Yuri (Zlatko Buric). He was hilarious as the Russian Billionaire trying to make his way during the disaster. His thick accent reminded me of our wonderful 1980's cold war movies. Just a funny character that provides some laugh out loud moments.
Let's be honest about what this movie is. The stars of the movie are 500 ft tidal waves, volcanoes, falling buildings, and earthquakes. Don't expect too much character development in 2012. There aren't any Oscar performances in this movie. The actors do a good job, but they are just filling in time before the next jaw-dropping special effect. With that said, the effects are REALLY good and worth seeing on the big screen.
My suggestion: If you like this kind of movie, I would go see it. It's nothing you haven't already seen. It's just on a bigger scale than what we've seen before. They could have trimmed 30-40 minutes off this movie. It went on a little too long for my liking. 2012 is full of "yeah right" moments and some unbelievable pilot skills, but the movie is still fun to watch. If you like disaster movies like me, this is right up your alley.
