India rejoiced when the Grammy awards were won by our music maestro AR Rahman and lyricist Gulzar on Sunday.
Whilst Rahman was present for the event to receive his award, Gulzar however was absent for the same. And now the noted lyricist is waiting for the accolade to come along. Calling it a strange situation, Gulzar stated, “Both Rahman and I were accorded our respective Grammy trophies. Unfortunately I wasn't in Los Angeles to collect mine. I don't know where it is. I hope it reaches me.”
It is reported that for prestigious awards like Oscars and Grammys, it is against their rule to hand over the awards to the other members of a crew when the actual winner is absent.
"When I got my Oscar along with Rahman, he wasn't allowed to collect it on my behalf. It was sent to me by courier. I'm hoping that Grammy will reach me the same way," said Gulzar.
While Rahman is hailed all over for his achievement and headlines are being specially dedicated to him, Gulzar has no qualms about being overshadowed. He says, "Rahman is now the global face of Indian popular music and we must all rejoice in that. The fact that Jai ho got such worldwide popularity has a lot to do with Rahman being the global brand ambassador of our music."
