The 81st Academy Awards also saw 'Smile Pinky' a 39-minute short documentary film get an Oscar. The film centers round the life of a six-year old girl, Pinky from a village in Rural Uttar Pradesh. Pinky, the protagonist in the film suffers due to cleft lip deformity. Due to this reason she is shunned by her fellow villagers. 'Smile Pinky' was vying for the Oscars with four other films under the same category. The film is directed by Megan Mylan. The film portrays Pinky with a faulty cleft lip undergoing a cleft lip surgery and leading a normal life again. Since the film 'Smile Pinky' was nominated at the Oscars Pinky too got an invitation to walk the red carpet at the Oscar night. Pinky Sonkar was ridiculed in her village for her deformity and had even stopped going to school. But all that changed after Dr. Subodh K. Singh operated on her. He feels quite happy for the change he was able to bring into Pinky's life.
Statistics suggest that every one child in six hundred children is born with a cleft lip - palate deformity. With the issue of cleft lip taking center stage at the Oscars we now hope there will be relief to a lot of other children who suffer from this deformity, and bring a smile to their faces.
